Lask (Valérie Laskier dit) is a French painter born in Paris in 1976.

After studying at the Légion d’Honneur and the Institut Charlemagne, Valérie entered the Institut Pratique du Journalisme in Paris in 2000 and joined a French weekly news magazine.

5 years later, she was diagnosed with cancer and spent 2 years in a wheelchair, but her artistic spirit remained intact as she wrote a slam that was sold to benefit the Ligue contre le cancer.

In 2019, driven by her desire to share her experience with sick patients, she obtained her DU Patient Experte en cancérologie from the Sorbonne University Faculty of Medicine.

Painting was a revelation. She uses materials and colors to express her emotions and her rebirth.

Who is Valérie Laskier?

As a painter, I’ve only been embarking on this artistic adventure for two years, but it’s much more than just an adventure… it’s a real rebirth for me. Painting has allowed me to breathe new life into myself, and to heal deep wounds, particularly after going through the ordeal of cancer.

What’s in it for you?

Painting is an almost magical act for me. When I stand in front of a canvas, it’s as if the world disappears, and all that’s left are my emotions spread out in color. It’s a moment of letting go, of total sincerity with myself. I started painting at a time when I didn’t have the words to express what I was feeling. I didn’t know what I was doing, but it felt good. And each painting is a part of my soul, a part of my healing.

Can you tell us about the link between art and resilience?

When you go through something as intense as cancer, you come face to face with yourself, your fears, your pain, and also your immense solitude. Painting has enabled me to rediscover a part of myself that I had lost, the inner strength that drives us to keep going, to fight. This is the message I want to convey through my paintings: no matter how deep the darkness, there’s always a light somewhere, a possibility of rebirth.

Why are you organizing this auction at Paris City Hall on October 14, 2024?

Offering my paintings for this cause is a way for me to give back what life has given me. I know what it’s like to feel helpless in the face of disease, and I want these young people to be able, for a moment, to forget their struggle and live an extraordinary experience. At 28, I tell myself that if someone had done something like this for me, it would have given me a breath of hope and told them that they’re not alone in this fight.

Any last words?

If I have one wish to share, it’s that each of us can be reborn, no matter how deep the difficulties we’re going through…
